Afternoon Practice Update 7/30
From River Falls, Wisconsin
The Chiefs put practice No. 11 in the books Wednesday afternoon and it was a solid session.
There’s been great readership and reaction to these practice reports and it’s a pleasure to do them. But let me re-affirm something: these sessions as single elements that constitute only a moment in time. One day a guy is up, next day his legs are tired and he struggles through practice. Nobody in training camp has 11 great practices in a row. What I look for our trends, situations and performances that happen on a regular basis.
Plus remember this: I’m one pair of eyes. A lot happens in a practice that I don’t see, so just because a player is not mentioned does not mean he is, or is not doing his job.
Otherwise, without a beach close by, I can’t think of a better way to spend a summer afternoon. It was sunny and hot for this workout. QB Brodie Croyle again watched the practice. Nothing serious there, just giving him a rest. Also sitting out were G Brian Waters (rest), TE Tony Gonzalez (rest), DE Tamba Hali (forehead), DE Trevor Johnson (head trauma), DE Brian Johnston (shoulder), WR Kevin Robinson (knee) and RT Damion McIntosh (rest).
Kickers Nick Novak and Connor Barth had a session and both ended up three-for-three. Novak made his kicks from 38, 43 and 50 yards. Barth nailed three-pointers from 36, 40 and 48 yards.
Linebackers worked on pass coverage against tight ends/running backs. Donnie Edwards and Derrick Johnson looked good. E.J Kuale made a couple plays as did Demorrio Williams.
In the 7-on-7 drill, Tyler Thigpen struggled, hitting only four of eight throws with an interception (Brandon Flowers). Damon Huard was seven of eight.
In 26 plays of team practice, the offense had eight positive results. Thigpen showed his mobility again, taking a couple of boots and turning them into runs. He also hit WR Bobby Sippio for a touchdown pass on a third-and-goal play. Kolby Smith had several nice runs. Defensively, LB Derrick Johnson made several plays as did DE Turk McBride.
They ran the two-minute drill again. The situation: 1:12 left, the offense had the ball at their own 32-yard line with one timeout and down by five points. Huard took the first offense down to the defense’s 23-yard line with three first downs. But as time ran out, he threw an interception in the end zone to CB Dimitri Patterson. Thigpen picked up four first downs and got the offense in for a score, throwing a 2-yard TD pass to Sippio in the end zone thanks to his scramble away from pressure.
The Chiefs have a light practice Thursday morning and then the night workout against the Vikings.

Bob, From what ive seen it seems that Sippio would be great target down near the goalline. He is big and has great hands.
Do you think Chan will give him a fair shot.
Sip sip Sippio!!!!!
Bob, do you think Will Svitek has a shot at a starting job on the o-line?
GO CHIEFS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bob, as a Chiefs fan / Hokie Alum I am really happy with what I hear about Brandon Flowers so far! Seems like he has had quite a few INTs. Do you see a lot of potential here, or is this just a product of poor decision making from our QBs?
By the way, I really enjoy reading your reports! Keep up the good work!
Heading off to the dorm room and that nice comfy bed. Not … the comfy bed that is.
A moment to answer your questions.
Morgan: I think Sippio has a chance to make the team. I think after Bowe, Darling and Franklin, the fight for jobs is wide open and Sippio is in the middle of that. His special teams work will go a long way to deciding his roster future.
James14: I don’t think there’s any chance Svitek will be in the starting lineup. Right now, Svitek is just fighting to stay on the team and right now, he’s losing. At tackle the Chiefs will keep Albert/McIntosh/Richardson/Taylor. If they keep a fifth, he might have a chance.
Thanks for finding the site

Mark: you got in while I was working on my first replay.
Brandon Flowers is going to start in this defense and because he’s a rookie corner, he’ll get plenty of chances for interceptions. He’s athletic, hard-nosed and smart. So far, he’s been everything the Chiefs hoped he would be.
Right now, his practice INTs are more a product of the quarterbacks, but give him this: he’s in the right place at the right time. That’s half the battle when you play in the secondary in the NFL.

Wow! Excellent writing! You are a pro reporter!! Thanks for the updates!
Does Tamba Hali look like he will make the transition to the new side? What do you think? Even with Allen of last year??
Bob, Why is it that Tank Tyler has been unable to unseat Ron Edwards for the other DT slot next to Dorsey. I was hoping that Mcbride and Boone at DE, Hali on the other side, and Tank/Dorsey at the DT position..
Also was wondering, since Harris is on the bubble due to mediocre play and attitude, what about Mcintosh, we can take the cap hit, and he hasnt exactly lit up the Rt position, or been too happy about it. Why not make a move on Bentley at RG and let the rest battle for RT, or move up Harrison…
Start? Do you think Will Svetek will make the team? Will Bobby Sippio make the team too? Thanks.
Great site! Excellent reporting and insight. It’s still early, but it appears that the right side of the offensive line is one of the biggest “question marks” on this young team. Do you anticipate any kind of free agent acquisitions or trades for either a right guard or right tackle? Also, is there any chance that McIntosh moves over to the RG position? Thanks again for putting up this site. It’s a real treat for Chiefs’ fans.
How have the rookies been doing? Does Brad Cottam look good. Does Morgan, Franklin, Richardson, Carr, Johnston have a chance to start. Do you think Charles will be the starting KR and does Robinson have a chance of making the team or is his injury really hurting his chances.
Is Glenn Dorsey on the team i can find no news of him?
Hey BG, i love the site, I check it a couple times a day from my cell phone to check the latest news from camp. I also am curious for an accurate report on Dorsey’s progress. Some sites had him already regularly blowing through the double-teams of Waters/Rudy, and still others claim he has been unimpressive. It would be good to get an unbiased report.
Also very curious about #97 (Johnston) and his possibilities.
Thanks!
We do appreciate your willingness to attend camp and make these reports. Your insight helps those of us whom would love to attend also, but cannot. Thnak you for your work!
Question: How is Eric Price doing in his new role?
Hey Bob you mentioned that Webb could compete for a #4 WR position. Have Franklin and Darling showed him up already? Does Franklin look impressive?
