Afternoon Camp Update – 8/5

From St. Joseph, Missouri

Early morning rain and wet practice fields sent the Chiefs walkthrough session indoors on Friday morning. They still plan to be outside for the Friday afternoon practice beginning at 3 p.m.

But Todd Haley was enjoying the football sunshine from Thursday afternoon as almost his entire roster was on the field together for the first time since early January.

“We’ve got everybody on board, ready to go and each day we have to move forward,” Haley said. “We are going to continue to take it one day at a time. We have no pre-planned practices. We are preparing the next practice once we are done with the previous practice. That’s frustrating at times for the coaches, because it makes for some late nights.

“But it’s the best way for us to go right now … I feel good about where we are right now.”

For the first time in days, the shuttle service to KCI did not need to run as there were no additions to the roster after the team officially announced the signing of third-round draft choice OLB Justin Houston. He’s on campus and is expected to take part in the afternoon practice. Houston missed the first week of camp, and combined with the missed time because of the owners’ lockout and no team mini-camp, he’s got a lot of ground to make up and it must be done quickly. That’s something Haley talked to him about on Friday morning.

“I’ve talked about the rookie learning curve, well Justin has his work cut out for him,” Haley said. “And so do we; we have to give him a chance to succeed.

“We talked this morning and I told him we had to get going. I’m selfish, I want to win. That’s what I care about. We have to do everything as coaches that will give us the best chances to win and a bunch of those young guys I believe are going to have to contribute for us to have a chance to build on some of the good things that we’ve done.”

As expected, Haley provided no insight into the physical status of DE Glenn Dorsey and WR Jonathan Baldwin. They were dealing with injuries yesterday. With Dorsey it appeared to be his left knee, and with Baldwin it was his right hamstring or quad.

Both players were on the field for the Friday morning walkthrough, but they did not participate in the practice. Same for TE Tony Moeaki, who remains on the PUP list trying to get his right knee healed.

“Having everybody in place is a good thing,” Haley said. “This is a big year for us. We had some success last year, but this is a new year. I think this year will be defined by how we encounter each new challenge and opportunity

“That’s going on right now. We are trying to get a little bit better every day and we are getting ready for the opening of the season. Our sights are set for September 11 and Buffalo.”

Hopefully Houston can learn enough to be a 3rd down pass rusher this year.
